Published on December 14, 2023 · Written by Zack Fenech

Oaxaca is both the name of a state and its capital city – the largest city in the state and one of the most visited places in Mexico. It is also one of the main destinations in the country for celebrating Día de los Muertos.

In this guide to Oaxaca, we will cover all of the places of interest, food and drink to try, and much more.

Essential Things to Know Before Visiting Oaxaca

  • Oaxaca is generally safe by Mexican city standards, but you should still be cautious and avoid walking around at night, as some areas can be dodgy. Consider getting travel insurance before your trip.
  • Be prepared to walk a lot. The city is very walkable and most points of interest are spread out.
  • Many places only accept cash, so be prepared to have exact change on hand.

How to Get to Oaxaca, Mexico

By Coach Bus

I visited Oaxaca via a nine-hour luxury coach bus from Mexico City. Luxury buses are available at an affordable cost and come with a comfortable reclining seat, USB chargers, and an onboard bathroom. Wi-Fi is available but limited to 100 MB free. Prepare accordingly for a nine-hour ride.

By Plane

Flying is the quickest and most efficient way to reach Oaxaca. You can catch a flight from Mexico City International Airport, taking approximately one hour and costing roughly the same as the bus.

Transportation in Oaxaca

Taxis

The most common way of getting around in Oaxaca. Uber and Lyft are not available here. Taxis only accept cash. You may find yourself sharing a taxi with other passengers at various stops along the way.

Colectivos

For remote parts of Oaxaca, shared shuttle-like vehicles where several people travel together and negotiate a fare with the driver. Exact cash required.

Public Bus

Oaxaca has a public bus system. Fairly simple to navigate but can be chaotic during rush hour. Have the exact fare before boarding.

Places to Visit in Oaxaca

Oaxaca’s central square – the beating heart of the city. Vendors, open restaurants, shops, and live entertainment almost always guaranteed. Your evenings are best spent here.

2. Monte Albán

A pre-colonization archaeological zone featuring pyramids dating back to 500 BC. Depicted on Mexican currency and one of the most iconic places to visit in the state.

3. Hierve el Agua

A remarkable lookout point atop a hill featuring a rock formation that resembles a frozen waterfall. Quite difficult to reach (requiring several taxis and colectivos), but the panoramic views make it well worth the effort. Consider booking a tour to make the trip easier.

1. Tlayuda

Often called Mexican pizza – a large flat tortilla topped with asiento, refried beans, and quesillo. Can also be loaded with various meats, crickets, and vegetables. One of the best dishes the city has to offer.

A Mexican-style burger smothered in cheese, hot dogs, bacon, lettuce, and onion. You’ll find hamburguesa stands across the city.
